Large Pedestal Dining Table **SOLD**

$0.00

It’s always special to hear some history of a piece I am working on. I got this beautiful two-piece solid mahogany pedestal table from a young couple who had received it from her great grandmother. She had many memories of grand family dinners around that table while growing up. They made good use of one of the two sections in their small row house. However, during some home renovations, a contractor placed a couch(!) on top of the second table section and broke a 12” wide slab off the entire top! They needed someone to carefully repair and find a new home for their family treasure.

This piece is comprised of two tables that connect together, easily seating eight. Or use each table section separately as a four-top. Each one has a large turned pedestal base with four gracefully curved fluted legs with cast brass ends in the shape of acanthus leaves. Small brass casters allow the tables to roll. It was clear I was not the first to work on repairs to this table. The pedestal joints had been strengthened with battens the width of each table. Additional battens had been screwed to the underside of one table to help alleviate some warpage (which still remains), as the tops are only ¾” inch thick.

The fractured top piece had a relatively clean break with few missing splinters, so my repair is mostly invisible. However, it did require I refinish the entire top. To ensure the two tops matched perfectly, I also chose to refinish the second top. I hand scraped off the old finish and hand sanded with 180 grit paper before applying General Finishes Nutmeg gel stain. I wiped on three coats of General Finishes Semi-Gloss Arm-R-Seal, sanding with 220 between coats, resulting in a super smooth and gorgeous finish. I removed the cast brass feet, cleaned, polished, and then reinstalled with the missing brass screws.
