Children’s Furniture Set, $300

$300.00

This bespoke one-of-kind five-piece furniture set is absolutely adorable and hugely functional for toddlers. This near vintage-aged set was hand-crafted by the grandfather of one of my son’s close childhood friends. It was a sentimental family heirloom passed on to me to find its new home when the owner’s moved out of the area.  I’ve repaired and restored the set to like-new condition to pass on to another family to love and enjoy.

The two chairs are Windsor barrel-back saloon or Caboose-style dining armchairs, but in miniature scale (only 16” high). Made of birch and maple, these are very stable and sturdy. First designed for the Union Pacific Railroad, it was put into every caboose. I fixed a previous repair to a fractured arm with epoxy glue for a now seamless look.

The drop-leaf table is made of durable rock-hard maple and has been deep cleaned and the rusty hinges restored to open and close perfectly. The leaves are each one-piece of solid wood and show some beautiful figure and patina. When fully opened there’s over 5 sq ft of surface for tea parties, coloring or LEGO building, as its former owners can attest.  When not in use, it takes seconds to drop the leaves and the entire table takes up only a remarkably small 7”x 26” of space.

The two sturdy foot stools double as extra seats when the kids have friends over.  Plus, a stable step for reaching the kitchen and/or bathroom sink is indispensable for tykes. These have a convenient carrying hand-hold and will look better/last longer than plastic ones.

All the pieces have been hand sanded smooth and received three coats of a wipe-on urethane varnish from General Finishes (Arm-R-Seal). The natural wood look is a warm and durable finish, and able to withstand spills and other typical children’s activities.
